Arizona joins California, Oregon as west coast states with mandatory paid sick leave laws.

FRESNO, CALIFORNIA – At Datatech, we get it. Payroll services are increasingly complex as new laws are passed that provide for changing pay structures and new employee benefits such as sick pay. Beginning July 1, add Arizona to the list of state-mandated paid sick leave laws.

Quoted in the Arizona Republic, Ellen McKitterick a staff attorney for the Mountain States Employers Council in Scottsdale made the stunning statement,  “The majority of (businesses) that I’ve talked to…have never had to think about providing leave or paid leave for their employees. Some employers don’t know anything about it.”

Time to go to school or at least, come up with a business plan on how to provide the mandated benefit.

Several things Arizona employers need to know according to experts. Only State and Federal employees are exempt from this new law since they already receive paid time off in Arizona. If your company has 15 or more employees, companies must provide 40 hours a year of paid sick leave. Those with fewer, 24 hours of paid sick leave annually.

In Arizona and much like California, the law is broader than just calling in ‘sick’. It covers doctor visits and many other personal needs such as dealing with troubling domestic issues.

Arizona employers with questions about this new law can contact the Industrial Commission of Arizona.
