The Taxpayer First Act requires more employers to file W-2s or W-2Cs electronically. This means that by January 31, 2022*, employers who file 100 or more W-2s or W-2Cs will have to send them to SSA electronically.
By January 31, 2023*, employers who file 10 or more W-2s will have to send them to SSA electronically.

Previously, employers only had to file electronically when the number of W-2 records exceeded 250. For this reason, the Federal Electronic Reporting module was an optional module for Datatech Software.
The following information is for customers that may not have the module available and/or have not filed W-2’s electronically in the past.
What to Do if You Have Never Filed Electronically
Step 2: There are three ways to file W-2s electronically:
- Manually enter up to 50 W-2s directly into the W-2 template using a free product offered by the SSA called W-2 Online.
Use your Datatech software to create the Electronic W-2 file (EFW2) and then upload the file to the SSA through their Business Services Online (BSO) website. This option may require an upgrade to your software.
- Request a third party to prepare and transmit the W-2s electronically.
Upgrading your Datatech Software
To check whether your software has the Federal Electronic Reporting module, go to Payroll > Year End Tax Reporting and look for Generate Electronic W-2 File.
If you do not have this module but would like your Datatech Software to be able to create electronic W-2 forms, email Rochelle@DatatechAg.com for pricing.
